What results should I expect?

Where is BOTOX® Used?

BOTOX is used to temporarily reduce the activity of the muscles that cause the wrinkles around your eyes and forehead such as  your crow’s feet (the corners of your eyes), your vertical frown lines between your eyebrows, and  your forehead wrinkles… basically, the upper one-third of your face. Juvederm, on the other hand is used for the wrinkles around your nose and mouth.

Fine wrinkles that are not caused by facial expression can be improved with chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments.

How did I get all these wrinkles?

You can thank all of the years of squinting and frowning for the wrinkles between your eyebrows and on the bridge of your nose, across your forehead, and at the corners of your eyes! These “dynamic” wrinkles can make an otherwise happy person look angry or sad. Dermasurgeons, like Dr. White and Dr. Woodall can improve these lines without surgery and without scars by a simple injection of BOTOX Cosmetic.

What exactly is BOTOX Cosmetic?

BOTOX is a purified protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In small doses, it is used very effectively for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes.  BOTOX Cosmetic has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology and neurology since the 1980's, and for wrinkle therapy since 1991.

How does BOTOX® work?

Dynamic wrinkles, such as crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles, are due to repetitive facial expression. BOTOX Cosmetic works by temporarily reducing the actions of the muscles that cause the persistent frown lines that have developed between your brows over time. With BOTOX Cosmetic, these muscles can be weakened without detracting from your facial expressiveness.

What is the BOTOX procedure like?

It’s a simple, 10-minute treatment for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows that consist of a few tiny injections.

Dr. Woodall or Dr. White will have you remove any make up and wash the areas that you will have injected.

Once seated upright, Dr. White or Woodall will have you contract the muscle in the area being treated so he can better target the injection into the muscle. For example, you will be asked to frown if you're receiving injections for wrinkles between the eyes.  A series of tiny injections will follow for each treatment area.

Your BOTOX appointment will take about a half hour from start to finish, depending on the number of areas being treated. As soon as the series of injections is completed, you can go back to your regular activities. Dr. Woodall or Dr. White will ask you to refrain from bending or laying down for approximately four hours.

Is the Botox procedure painful?

Anesthesia is not required and most patients experience only minimal and brief discomfort. Dr. White or Dr. Woodall may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting.

What are common side effects of Botox?

Side effects are minimal and typically relate to the local injection. Soreness or mild bruising, while uncommon, may occur around the injection site. Makeup may be worn after treatment, but care should be taken to avoid pressing or massaging the area for several hours. In rare instances, patients may develop temporary weakness of the neighboring muscles, a temporary droopy brow or eyelid, or a headache. (www.ASDS.net)

When will I start to see results from Botox?

You should start to see a visible improvement in the treated areas within a week. The area may continue to improve for up to a week.

How long will the results last?

When administered properly, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment can last up to 4 months. If you do not continue treatments, your wrinkles will gradually look like they did before treatment.

How will BOTOX affect my facial expressions?

After treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic, you may look in the mirror and see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows and around your eyes. But BOTOX Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance. You can still frown or look surprised—without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

What about men?

BOTOX Cosmetic is certainly not just for women. A man who has pronounced lines between his brows may be perceived as angry or stressed—and he does not want to look that way. A BOTOX Cosmetic treatment requires little time out of the office. So, it is possible to have the procedure done during a lunch hour and head right back to the office.

What does BOTOX cost?

BOTOX treatments start at $350 and is priced according to the area that you are treating. Typical areas of BOTOX Injections include:

The Glabella: Vertical lines between the eyebrows.

The Forehead: Horizontal lines across the forehead

The Crow’s Feet: The lines around the outer eyes.

Who should I choose for my BOTOX treatments?

It is true that anyone with a medical license can administer BOTOX and it does not have to be in a doctor’s office. But it is very important, for your safety and your positive cosmetic results, that you choose a physician who has studied the skin, its muscles, its nerves, and every tiny nuance about how it works for their entire career. Dr.  Woodall and Dr. White are both board-certified dermatologists who are nationally recognized for their clinical and cosmetic skills.

It is equally important that your BOTOX injections are administered in a safe, sterile environment to minimize any risks. The Palmetto Skin & Laser Center is certified by the AAAHC, which is a voluntary process through which a non-profit ambulatory health care organization is able to measure the quality of its services and performance against nationally recognized standards. The accreditation certificate is a symbol to others that an organization is committed to providing high-quality care and that it has demonstrated its commitment by measuring up to AAAHC’s standards. Learn more about our AAAHC Certification here.

Recent studies conducted by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) have shown an increase in patient complications resulting from non-physicians practicing medicine and its impact on patient safety. You can read their position statement on the use of dermal fillers and injectibles here.

Historically, dermatologic surgeons have been the pioneers and leaders in the field of cosmetic and medically necessary skin surgery. In fact, the science of many of the cosmetic surgery procedures and skin cancer treatments performed today were either originated or enhanced by dermatologic surgeons. For example, these skin surgery experts invented laser surgery for birthmarks, liposuction using local anesthesia, hair transplantation, the use of many filler substances like Juvederm and Restylane, most chemical peeling treatments, BOTOX Cosmetic therapy, laser hair removal, laser resurfacing for wrinkles, many leg vein treatments, microdermabrasion and more.
